🩺 What is Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss occurs when part of the auditory system (outer, middle, inner ear, or auditory nerve) is damaged or blocked. It may be temporary or permanent, mild to profound, and can affect one or both ears.

Types of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is not the same for everyone. Depending on which part of the ear is affected—outer, middle, or inner ear—hearing loss can be classified into three main types. Understanding these categories helps patients and families choose the right treatment and rehabilitation options.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL)

  • Cause: Damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve.

  • Symptoms: Muffled speech, difficulty hearing in noisy environments, trouble detecting high‑pitched sounds.

  • Treatment: Permanent but manageable with hearing aids, cochlear implants, and auditory rehabilitation.

Conductive Hearing Loss

  • Cause: Blockage or damage in the outer or middle ear that prevents sound from reaching the inner ear.

  • Symptoms: Sounds seem softer but clarity is preserved; often reversible.

  • Treatment: Medical or surgical correction (wax removal, ear tubes, reconstructive surgery).

Mixed Hearing Loss

  • Cause: Combination of sensorineural and conductive factors.

  • Symptoms: Features of both SNHL and conductive loss.

  • Treatment: Requires a multidisciplinary approach—medical treatment plus hearing aids or implants.

Common Symptoms of Hearing Loss

  • Difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy places

  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves

  • Turning up TV or phone volume excessively

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

  • Delayed speech and language development in children

  • Social withdrawal or frustration due to poor hearing clarity

If you experience any symptoms of hearing loss—such as muffled speech, difficulty hearing in noisy places, or constantly increasing TV volume—don’t wait.
