How to Support Your Father in Adjusting to Hearing Aids: Tips for Providing Care

Adjusting to new hearing aids can take some time, especially if your father is wearing them for the first time. Here are six tips to help him get used to his new hearing aids:

  1. Wear Them at Home First: Encourage your father to start by wearing the hearing aids at home or in quiet environments. Focus on one-on-one conversations. Reading aloud or talking to a pet can also help him get used to his own voice.

  2. Give Himself Homework: For extra practice, he can try to locate the sources of all the sounds in his environment. Listening to audio books or talk radio while he’s home alone can also be helpful.

  3. Take Breaks: Gradually increase the number of hours he wears the hearing aids each day. Start with a few hours and then add more time. This helps his brain adjust to the new sounds.

  4. Attend Follow-Up Visits: Regular follow-up visits with a hearing care professional are essential. They can fine-tune the sounds he’s hearing, adjust the fit, and address any challenges he’s facing.

  5. Consider Hearing Aid Care Classes: If available, attending orientation classes for new hearing aid wearers can lead to greater satisfaction with hearing aid use.

  6. Anticipate Some Frustration: Background noise may be overwhelming initially. Remind him that this frustration is normal as he adjusts to hearing sounds he hasn’t noticed in years. 🦻🎧
