Diagnostic Audiology Services (0-3 years)
If your child has been referred after a hearing screening, we understand how worrying this may feel. The next important step is to undergo a detailed diagnostic hearing test to understand the exact nature and degree of any hearing difficulty. At Unicare Speech & Hearing, our audiologists are specially trained to carry out these evaluations with care and precision. Sometimes the reason may be as simple as a wax build-up in the ear, while in other cases it could point to a congenital condition. Whatever the cause, we are here to identify it thoroughly and guide you with the right solutions, ensuring that your child receives the best possible support to grow, learn, and enjoy the sounds of life without barriers.
At Unicare Speech & Hearing Clinic, we believe in uncovering the true cause of hearing difficulties with precision and care. Our audiologists use a comprehensive range of advanced diagnostic tests to evaluate every aspect of hearing health. These include:
-
Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA/ABR): The BERA test is a highly advanced and objective method used to determine the degree of hearing loss. By stimulating the auditory nerve with specific sound signals, this test records the brainstem’s response to auditory stimuli. Unlike behavioral tests, BERA does not require any active participation from the child, making it especially valuable for newborns and young children. Its precision allows audiologists to detect even the mildest forms of hearing loss—conditions that might otherwise go unnoticed in everyday life. Early identification through BERA ensures timely intervention, helping children access the sounds essential for speech, learning, and overall development.
-
Impedance Audiometry (Tympanometry): This test evaluates how the middle ear responds to changes in pressure and sound. By measuring the movement of the eardrum and middle ear structures, tympanometry helps us determine whether hearing loss is caused by conditions such as earwax buildup, middle ear fluid, or outer ear infections. It is a quick, painless, and highly informative assessment that provides valuable insight into the health of the ear and guides us toward the most appropriate treatment or rehabilitation plan.
-
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE): Diagnostic OAE testing provides valuable insights into the functioning of the cochlea, the sensory organ responsible for converting sound vibrations into electrical signals for the brain. By measuring the tiny sounds (emissions) produced by the inner ear in response to auditory stimuli, this test helps us determine whether the cochlea is working properly. OAE is especially useful for newborns and young children, as it is quick, non-invasive, and does not require active participation. It plays a crucial role in early detection of hearing loss, ensuring timely intervention and management for a child’s healthy auditory development.
-
Behavioral Observation Audiometry: This test carefully observes changes in a child’s behavioral patterns in response to sound stimuli. By monitoring how a child reacts to different sounds, our audiologists can assess the real-world impact of hearing loss on daily experiences. Behavioral audiometry not only provides valuable insight into how hearing difficulties affect communication and learning but also helps in diagnosing specific types of hearing loss. This approach ensures that every child’s hearing challenges are understood in context, allowing us to recommend the most effective management and rehabilitation strategies.
✨ With these tests, our expert team can identify whether the hearing loss is due to something simple, like earwax buildup, or more complex conditions such as congenital anomalies. Early and accurate diagnosis ensures timely management, helping every child enjoy the sounds of life without barriers.
Unicare Speech & Hearing Clinic is proud to be one of the very few centers in West Delhi offering such comprehensive and detailed hearing testing for children. Our specialized facilities and expert audiologists ensure that every child receives the most accurate diagnosis and care. Diagnostic Audiology Services (3+ years)
Hearing loss can occur at any age, and in older children it may arise from causes such as ear infections, traumatic injuries, or progressive congenital conditions that become more severe during the school years. Regardless of the underlying reason, any degree of hearing loss can have a profound impact on a child’s development. At this critical stage, children are learning to speak, communicate, and build the foundation for academic success. Even mild hearing difficulties can interfere with speech and language acquisition, classroom learning, and social interaction. That is why early identification and timely intervention are essential—to ensure every child has the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive without barriers to sound and communication.
At Unicare Speech & Hearing Clinic, our audiologists are specially qualified to provide friendly, cooperative, and child-centered hearing assessments. We understand that young children require a gentle approach, and our team ensures every test is conducted with care and patience. To identify the true cause of hearing difficulties and support healthy development, we offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic evaluations, including:
-
Play Audiometry: Play Audiometry is a specialized method of conducting Pure Tone Audiometry designed specifically for young children. Since children often find it difficult to cooperate with conventional hearing tests, this technique uses engaging play-based activities to encourage participation. By turning the test into a game—such as placing a block, dropping a ball, or performing a simple action whenever a sound is heard—our audiologists can reliably measure hearing thresholds in a child-friendly manner. This approach not only makes the assessment enjoyable but also ensures accurate results, helping us identify hearing difficulties early and effectively.
-
Speech Audiometry: At Unicare Speech & Hearing Clinic, we conduct speech audiometry specially designed for children. This test evaluates how well a child can recognize and understand speech at different loudness levels, providing crucial insights into their ability to communicate in everyday situations. By tailoring the assessment to be age-appropriate and child-friendly, our audiologists ensure accurate results while keeping the process engaging and comfortable. Speech audiometry plays an important role in diagnosing hearing difficulties that may affect language development, learning, and social interaction, allowing us to recommend timely interventions for a child’s healthy growth.
-
Impedance Audiometry (Tympanometry): This test evaluates how the middle ear responds to changes in pressure and sound. By measuring the movement of the eardrum and middle ear structures, tympanometry helps us determine whether hearing loss is caused by conditions such as earwax buildup, middle ear fluid, or outer ear infections. Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD)
The auditory system is an intricate network where sound waves are transformed into electrical signals and transmitted through multiple relay stations before reaching the auditory cortex in the brain. While a child may appear to hear sounds normally, parents sometimes notice difficulties in following instructions, sequencing auditory commands, or comprehending spoken language. This can be due to a disruption not in the ear itself, but in the brain’s higher-level processing centers—a condition known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD). CAPD is often under-recognized, yet it does occur in children and can significantly affect learning, communication, and social interaction. Unlike hearing loss, CAPD involves challenges in how the brain interprets and organizes auditory information.
Researchers and clinicians describe five main types of CAPD:
-
Auditory discrimination deficits: difficulty distinguishing between similar sounds
-
Auditory figure-ground problems: trouble focusing on important sounds in noisy environments
-
Auditory memory issues: difficulty recalling auditory information
-
Auditory sequencing difficulties: struggles with understanding the order of sounds or instructions
-
Auditory cohesion problems: challenges integrating auditory information for higher-level comprehension.
Recognizing these subtypes is crucial, as early identification and intervention can help children develop strategies to overcome these barriers and thrive academically and socially.
To help us identify whether your child may have CAPD, kindly fill in the following screening questionnaire. Once submitted, our customer care team will contact you to discuss the results and guide you on the next steps.
