Brainstem Evoked Response audiometry (BERA) is a diagnostic test that is used to assess the auditory pathway from the ear to the brainstem. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing hearing loss, especially in infants and young children who are unable to communicate effectively. This test can also be used to identify the pathologies of auditory nerve and brainstem.
Procedure
The BERA procedure involves placing electrodes on the patient's scalp and delivering auditory stimuli through earphones. The electrodes measure the electrical activity in the brainstem in response to the stimuli. The test is conducted in a soundproof room to minimize background noise and interference. The audiologist will deliver a series of clicks or tones at different frequencies and intensities, and the patient's brainstem responses are recorded. The test is painless and takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.

Preparation for BERA Testing:
Don't use any hair oil a day before testing
Shampoo and clean the hair and forehead properly
Don't take any caffeinated drinks before the test
As the test requires child to sleep, it is advisable to wake the child early on the day of testing.
As child may be required to be sedated, keep a clearance letter from your paediatrician ready before the procedure.
